On 1 and 2 June, artist Irini Kalogeropoulou will take you on an interactive sound adventure through Eindhoven with several sound walks and a solo exhibition at NULZES. “Cityphonic Walks” is an immersive experience consisting of four parts, taking place in different spaces and times in Eindhoven with live performances during the walk.
Needed: A bicycle to cycle to the different locations and a pair of soft shoes that can get dirty.
As John Cage has insisted, “there is no such thing as silence. Something is always happening that makes a sound.” Similarly, there is no such thing as an empty space. As long as the human body is actively listening and being heard, there is always the potential to create public spaces.
About the artist
From late April to early June, Irini Kalogeropoulou works as artist in residence on the ‘Cityphonic Walks’ project. With a conceptual background in “performing public space” we found a perfect match.

About Cityphonic
Walks
During Irini’s residency, she develops Cityphonic Walks, exploring the ‘phonē’ (voice) of a city. She focuses on the invisible, silent, and unspoken aspects of everyday life. As TAC transforms into the ‘new TAC’, we explore the potential of construction sites and in-between spaces through sound. What impact do these spaces have on the city and its communities?
The research project sought ways to extend the voice of the city through the concept of acoustic justice, balancing sound, silence, conflict, and domesticity.
Walking, listening, field recordings, soundscape composition, and the creation of verbal notation were the methods used to uncover underlying power structures and social dynamics, which, although initially site-specific, ultimately reflect broader social concerns. In this way, the affective capacities of the soundscape and its ongoing role in shaping public spaces were brought to the surface, working towards strategies for a community-driven way of being together.
Expo
Begins at 15:00 at NULZES, Gasfabriek 3A
“The whole universe wants to be touched! Listen with me!”
An exhibition where there’s nothing to see—only to hear. This exhibition takes the form of a curated walk through sonic landscapes from all the sites the audience and the artist has visited during the soundwalks. And is designed for listening while walking, sitting, drinking, or dancing in the space. It explores the term cityphonic juxtaposing silenced narratives with sonic ephemeral events of urban life transitioning from the inner to the outer realms of the city’s collective body.
Live performance
16:00 at NULZES, Gasfabriek 3A
“The artists, three speakers, an audience. Can we leave things as they are?”
This concluding part will feature a collective performance, between three musicians, any sound sources, two speakers and an audience questioning together: Can we leave things as they are? The three performers propose sound arguments for the world we live in, reflect on them, deconstruct them, and collectively build new sonic
environments in a time and space where it almost seems impossible.

Sound walk
Join us for an interactive sound walk and cycle at two locations in Eindhoven, featuring live performances during the event.
Start 13:00 at Kronehoefstraat 30A

First walk
From TAC (Kronehoefstraat 30A) to Commonwealth War Cemetery.
“A sound, A table. Shoes. A Dog. A White Hunter. A Leave. Suppose An Eyes”
Sound creates relations between bodies, things and places that come to be understood as “home”. During the walk you will be guided to explore the relational everyday activities and practices of walking, listening, and ambulatory sound-making while traversing urban residential areas.
Second walk
From Vonderweg 1 to Piazza
“Metropolis of Eindhoven: spatial sound platform”
Imagine how a city would be shaped if audibility were the fundamental condition for participation in public life. This walk involves collective listening in the square, a space that
serves as a spatial sound platform, akin to an urban machine. The sounds in this walk become narrative threads expressing both their political and poetic possibilities.
