ABOUT DIEWKE VAN DEN HEUVEL
Simply calling her a photographer or filmmaker is not enough. Creating images encompasses so much more—it also carries the responsibility of considering whom you give space to, whom you choose to show, and how. What you give back is something you learn from, and through that, you develop yourself. She is not afraid to make mistakes and actively works on them. Fighting for equality across all layers of humanity. It is an inner journey to become a better person for her environment, the people around her, and the world.
Much of her research is focused on learning how to be a good ally to marginalized people. How can she use her privileges for the greater good, give her platform to others, and reconsider her own position so that together we can grow toward a future without inequality?

The exhibition melting heart
The Melting Heart exhibition took place from February 11 to March 26, 2023, at TAC.
When Diewke was growing up, her parents made her very aware of the disasters that our Mother Earth faces. At home, they even thanked her every evening for their food. “Even though, as a teenager, thanking the earth and the sun for the food on my plate felt quite uncomfortable, today I’m grateful that they taught me to appreciate Mother Nature.“
Later, when her career at the dance academy ended sooner than she had hoped, she decided to study geography. The earth is vast and fascinating and has been studied for centuries, yet we still don’t know everything about it.
She missed expressing her creativity in her studies, so she chose a different path and enrolled in an art academy to study photography. There, two of her greatest fascinations came together. Many years later, this book became the child born from those two passions.
